The Darling Sisters

"Changing the world with good manners and style!"

Welcome to the home of the Darling Sisters. With Lovely Lisa of ShutterBug Baby and all our fabulous friends in the Sophisticates Society, Darla and Blossom Darling are here with vintage-inspired charm, deportment, manners, style, philosophy and anything that we feel will make this lovely world even lovelier.

We are based in Canberra, Australia. Frequently we pack our pretty bags and hop on a train, plane or automobile to take our brand of charm interstate - and via the Darling Sisters' Boutique, even overseas.

We love an alternative lifestyle! Goths, punks, burlesque fans, rockabillies, mods, geeks, steampunks and more are catered to! However, whether or not you are of the subcultural persuasion ... we hope that you will find something here for you.

While you're here try a little retail therapy! The Darling Sisters' Boutique has a growing range of vintage and tretro fashion, jewellery, cosmetics, accessories for travelling and for your home, and gifts for the vintage and retro ladies and gentlemen. We stock Tarantula clothing, accessories by Retro-A-Go-Go and Classic Hardware, Anne Taintor, hosiery by Gio, Leg Avenue and Music Legs, Custom Vintage cosmetics and housewares and more. Online shopping for anybody into vintage, Rockabilly, Goth, Sci-Fi, Steampunk and more.

Here you will find details of all the services that the Darlings can offer, from our group Salons to one-on-one consultation, vintage glamour photography and portraiture with ShutterBug Baby, entertainment, events, glamour and links to our favourite people in Australia and overseas who can help to make life a bit more charming. Please come in and browse, and we hope that you will be inspired to become one of our Charming Friends. XXOO Darla and Blossom

Why we love online shopping

When our Charming Friends admire our outfits, we are frequently asked 'where did you get it?' To which we usually answer: we sell it in our online shop, or else we purchased it at somebody else's online shop.

A common response to this statement is 'You know, I never buy clothes online. I don't know how you do it! I have to try them on first.'

Perhaps it's time that we explain why we love online clothes shopping. The fact is that we are usually very pleased with the results. Why is this?

Some modern manners

Charming Friends,

Good manners are eternally charming ... however as times change, so do our ideas of what constitutes desirable etiquette. Long gone are the days when a gentleman would be expected to lay down his coat to allow a lady to avoid a puddle (if indeed such a thing was ever true) - and a very good thing too, as it would be such a pity to ruin a lovely coat in that manner.

Dressing to 'hide your sins' and other philosophical challenges

Charming Friends,

When people find out that among other things we do a bit of styling, one of the questions that frequently comes up is 'oh, so can you help me to select clothing that hides my sins/flaws/trouble areas?'

Social networking etiquette

Charming friends,

Isn't social networking fabulous? No, we're not being sarcastic: actually we adore having online avenues for enjoying the company of Charming Friends, learning about what people are doing and thinking, and generally staying in touch. And of course, the key word is 'social': as for any other social occasion, manners and good etiquette count on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and all the rest.

ANZAC Day etiquette

One of Australia's solemn (well, as much as Australians can manage) days of remembrance occurs this weekend. Here in Canberra, it is likely to be a rainy one! The Dawn Services will be happening across Australia and elsewhere, and whether or not you intend to attend a service, it seems timely to recall a few points of ANZAC Day etiquette and advice for Aussies and visitors to our beautiful land.

Ten of Life's Greatest Moments

  • The first sip of a perfect Martini, made by a talented mixologist, in a pretty bar, after a really hard day's work.
  • The opportunity to scent-layer at home, for no great reason. You know: slow afternoon. So you take a bubble bath, then add moisturiser, talcum powder, all of the same scent - followed by a quiet night at home wth pasta and a fillum. (The trick, as with all scent-work, is to be lightlightlight and not overdo things.

Living Darling ... in recovery

Charming Friends,

Here I am on the sofa again, with my trusty laptop, my Darling Doggy beside me, my faithful quilt, my walking-stick to hand and the never-ending cup of tea on the table. I have been learning a lot about being an invalid!

(This is a long blog, as I really have learned a great deal - be warned ...)

Living Darling ... in hospital!

Charming Friends,

I am writing this as I sit at home recuperating from a rather unexpected trip to hospital! Into every life a little ill-health must visit: I truly hope that you never have to experience the need for very strong medical intervention, such as surgery, but alas we cannot control these things and the main thing is to feel fortunate if, like me, you have access to an excellent medical system.
