Bear Flag Republic - vintage treats for ladies and gentlemen

Bear Flag Republic gets a lot of repeat visitation from the Darling Sisters. Owners Scott and Gina hail from sunny California but have a fantastic online shop that is easy to order from - and they have an eBay shop too if you prefer that format!

BFR has a really extensive range of fashion and accessories for ladies and for gentlemen. They also make an effort to provide the widest range of sizing they can. Ladies can find Bettie Page and Stop Staring! among other labels. Men can find ReVamp, hats and fab fab shoes.

Service is prompt, friendly and trustworthy. Scott and Gina are more than happy to answer questions, and they have a very good returns policy, which online shoppers know is important!

There are plenty of other fun things available including turntables!

We are keen to support online suppliers who make such an effort with sizing, range and customer-friendly policies. Please check out the Bear Flag Republic at www.bearflagrepublicusa.com.

Custom Vintage: Everything for those inspired by the 1940s - 50s

Darla and Blossom really adore this gorgeous shop. It is a one stop shop for all things vintage, girly and eco friendly – best of all they are an Australian owned and operated family business. Owners Leah and Roy are friendly, cheerful and professional, and put enormous personal care into everything they make and sell.

Custom Vintage products include delicious natural home-made bath and body care, handmade jewelry, vintage, rockabilly and tattoo parlour styled clothing, lingerie, gift baskets, candles, incense and more! They supply Stop Staring! Bettie Page Clothing, Steady Clothing, Shirley of Hollywood, Leg Avenue, Ellie & Penthouse shoes, Forplay, Rago shapewear, and Skinny Dip swimwear.

All Custom Vintage hand-made products are palm-free. Leah and Roy care about our lovely planet and all the creatures that live upson it, and they eschew habitat-destroying products and donate a portion of their proceeds to the Australian Orangutan Project.

We love Custom Vintage so much that we have gotten together with them to provide a special Custom Vintage and Darling Sisters range! We are absolutely addicted to the delicious body butters and soy candles (which also work nicely as massage oil and perfume!) so Leah and Roy created a delicious girlie old-fashioned line especially for us.

All products are beautifully packaged, and come promptly and well-wrapped for postage. You will see that pricing is very reasonable!

In terms of sizing, do please note that plus-size garments and lingerie are right there on the Custom Vintage website - which is still under development, and well worth a look from time to time.

Danielle Kathleen Jewellery - laser cut deliciousness

The Darling Sisters recently had a stall at Canberra's first (definitely not last) 'Fash'n'Treasure market, where wonderful fashion suppliers plied their wares at the Kingston Bus Depot Markets.

This was a wonderful day and we intend to return again and again and again - we met so many nice people.

One of the people we met was the most beautiful lady with glorious fifties-style clothes, who was wearing the most fascinating laser-cut acrylic jewellery.

Imagine our delight when we found that she was the designer and maker of said jewellery, and she had a stall right there. We made time to go for a visit, and oh my ...

Well, Blossom actually squealed a bit when she saw Danielle Kathleen's exquisite and perfectly-made delights. Perhaps a little embarrassing for Blossom, but we defy you not to do the same when you see the beauty and creativity and just plain ... yumminess.

Danielle's jewellery is sharp-cut, creamy confection of fantasy, classic, gothy and steampunk inspiration. Pendants and brooches of the variety for which you create an outfit, not the other way around. Darla immediately purchased one of Danielle's magnificent shiny black signature filligree moth brooches, and Blossom is richer to the tune of a creamy white pendant, steampunk-inspired with gorgeously dark memento mori overtones, featuring a winged clock-face.

Both pieces are startlingly beautiful set against a black turtleneck and just so wearable.

Enough typing! You need to go and see for yourself. We hope Danielle will be back at the next Fash'n'Treasure, and in the meantime you can find her on Etsy, or visit her Blogspot, or become a Facebook fan.

We have done all of the above!

Eline Martinsen Couture Corsetry - designer corsetry for everyone

We adore Eline Martinsen. She is a Canberra girl: graduate of CIT Fashion (and now a teacher of corsetry at same) and maker of the most delicious corsets, costumes, occasionwear and lingerie for ladies and gentlemen. And on top of that, she is one of Nature's Good Guys: she is professional, smart and so, so nice!

Eline's work is all personally designed and handmade to very, very exacting standards. Eline believes that each garment should be extra special: she believes in good fitting and high production standards. It shows. Her corsets and other garments are strong enough to wear every day and special enough to wear for that one super-important occasion when it is crucial to look spectacular. She uses traditional and modern techniques to manufacture every piece: her corsets are sturdy enough for tight-lacing.

All of Eline's work is lush, romantic and visually dramatic. She has a lovely feel for shape, colour and texture: have a look at her website gallery and enjoy the marvellous fabrics. Eline custom-makes pieces for ladies and gentlemen of all sizes and shapes, and has somewhat of a cult following in Canberra.

We think that Eline's work will become increasingly sought-after all across Australia - and internationally!

Gallery Serpentine: dreamy fashion for the darkly-inclined

Gallery Serpentine

Gallery Serpentine has something of a cult following, as well it might. From its two locations one can find the most astonishing garments for ladies and gentlemen, including accessories, at every size possible, including half-sizes. Yes, that is correct: if you are a size 11, 17, or 29, you will find it at Gallery Serpentine.

Gallery Serpentine specialises in corsetry, period clothing, Victoriana, Gothic wear, and wedding and special occasion wear, which can be found at its Robertson branch.

This is seriously beautiful stuff, made seriously well. The Darlings believe that there is a reason for every person to own at least one piece by Gallery Serpentine. You do not have to be of the Gothic or subcultural persuasion to enjoy Gallery Serpentine; you simply need to appreciate unique, beautiful, well-fitting quality clothing.

This is not Target: it is not a place where you pop in looking for a few tshirts at less than $20 each. It is a beautifully appointed boutique where you come to be treated as a valuable customer, try on amazing clothing in cosy fitting rooms, make good use of the expertise of the friendly staff, and select a special outfit to last you years and years and years. The clothing is not cheap but it is very good value for money.

We applaud the staff at Gallery Serpentine for their excellent personal service and inclusivity. Every time we have ventured there (and we do so at every opportunity) we have observed the staff treating ALL comers with respect, courtesy and professionalism.

Their online shopping is straightforward and easy. You can order custom sizing online or in the shop. You can also order custom garments in your preferred fabric, or if you have special needs (e.g. to work with an artificial limb) the staff are happy to help.

The Darling Sisters have a number of Gallery Serpentine key pieces in their wardrobes that just never stop being favourites. These are garments around which one builds the rest of the wardrobe! They are well-enough made to last and last and they never fail to attract compliments.

Peta Pledger: classic custom garments

Darla often goes about sporting the sweetest little skirt imaginable. It is a navy-blue nautical-style number, a lovely shape, is absolutely beautifully made, has gorgeous buttons, and hails from the clever needle of our new heroine Peta Pledger.

Peta makes fabulous one-off or short-run garments based on classic fifties styles. We can let you know from experience that her service is lovely, her garments are fantastic and good value for money, and you will be delighted by the neat little details.

Peta does made-to-measure garments which means that you are guaranteed a range of sizing and a good fit. Because this is not mass-produced clothing you won't experience the unfortunate 'size-creep' that afflicts larger concerns, where the sizes gradually become smaller and smaller as materials are economised upon. Peta's garments will always be well-made, because her quality control is very good.

These are garments that will grace your wardrobe for many years, and that you will find yourself wearing again and again as they are classic enough to transcend the vagiaries of fashion. This is what we mean by good value for money: you will pay more than you might at Target, but frankly, less that you would for many ill-made and quickly-out-of-style fashion label garments. With Peta's clothing you will certainly get more than your money's worth.

If you want something well-made and nicely fitted that is a bit different, we recommend contacting Peta at her website: www.petapledger.bigcartel.com.

Prestige Boutique: another reason to visit Parkes!

The Darling Sisters love our yearly pilgrimage to Parkes, NSW, for the Elvis Festival. We are fans of the King, but part of the great pleasure in going to Parkes is to meet the wonderful residents of this pretty town, and to shop the fab boutiques.

One of our all-time favourites is Prestige Boutique. Prestige actually houses two boutique suppliers: Lisa McHatten's 'Little Black Dress' garments and accessories for well-dressed ladies, and Maria Rushby's fabulous hats.

Prestige Boutique stocks everything a lady could possibly need for a special occasion, and Lisa provides sizing from 6 to 26+ - each and every garment is special, beautiful and flattering and wonderfully priced. For every beautiful frock you will find the perfect hat, with Maria's gorgeous creations suiting absolutely any person and occasion.

The Darlings never wanted to leave this shop. Lisa and Maria made us feel so welcome, and provided such expertise and sweet, professional service. Everywhere we looked there were perfect hats, garments and accessories to catch the eye. It was basically our idea of heaven.

We really do recommend that if you are in Parkes enjoying the pretty town and friendly people, pop into Prestige and treat yourself to something special. You will be very happy when you do!

Secrets in Lace - gorgeous lingerie for all

Everybody deserves gorgeous, luxurious, magical lingerie that makes them feel like a million dollars. Everybody. If you are in the market, go and browse Secrets in Lace, where you will certaiinly find something to suit.

We are especially delighted with Secrets in Lace for two reasons: the first is that the sizing is excellent. Not only do the 'standard sizes' cover an excellent range (much more than most shops would), but they also do an extra range of sizing that is very generous. And no lousy second-best business for those people who require generous sizing either: this is beautiful lingerie for people. There is a fab range of bra and hosiery sizes in such beautiful shapes, fabrics and colours. Yummy!

The second reason is that their delivery costs are very reasonable and our ordering experience was very good. Given that high-quality lingerie can be tricky to find, it is especially good to know that it can be ordered online and delivered at a reasonable cost.

Check out their range of clothing as well - deliciously elegant!

Something Else Clothing - great design for every body

When we go to buy new clothes for ourselves, what do we want out of the experience?

It's fairly straightforward, isn't it? We want something lovely that suits us, fits us and is well-made. We want to love what we buy and wear it with confidence and comfort. We want great service and we want to get our money's worth. Simple!

Sadly, that is so rarely the case. More often, it seems to be a lengthy trawl around shop after shop, wondering what the heck is wrong with all the sizing these days, and why nothing ever seems to sit quite right. The clothes are often shoddily finished and too expensive for what we get, and the assistants frequently imply that it's our fault if our bodies don't confirm to the designer's idea of who ought to be wearing their clothes. When we do find the right size the fit is weird or the colour we want isn't available ... it can get very stressful.

But honestly, how difficult can it be to get it right?

Not at ALL according to our latest great fashion find! Nada is the lovely face behind Australian clothing label Something Else Clothing, and we are her biggest fans. Give her a try and we predict you will feel the same.

To start with, just look at her catalogue. Aren't those clothes gorgeous? Such adorable, wearable vintage/retro style! So many cute little details. Great shapes, fabulous colours.

Check out the shop - yes there is a nice easy online ordering facility. Now, independent Australian designers honestly can't keep every single size in stock for absolutely practical reasons, so you may or may not see your size available via the online shop. Never fear, just contact Nada and ask. She cheerfully does custom sizing - and she does not charge that much extra for it, it is definitely worth going for a custom order.

The Darlings both have custom garments by Something Else Clothing, and let us tell you about our experience (this was before Nada had seen our website or knew who we were, we were just another customer). We contacted her and asked for what we wanted. She contacted us back very quickly, was really lovely and approachable, got our measurements, and asked us if we wanted any modifications e.g. special fabrics, different types of buttons etc. We gave her our measurements and, with great excitement, our desired modifications. Nada made the garments very, very quickly and posted them off to us. They arrived wonderfully packed - honestly, it was like opening a lovely birthday present.

And the garments? Exactly what we wanted. Beautifully made - perfectly finished. Not a hint of a loose thread, not a single unfinished seam. Thoughtful little extras: for example there is a velvet bow on Blossom's skirt (a teeny perfect red velvet bow, couldn't you just die?) and it is actually fastened on with a nice sturdy brooch clasp, so that it can be removed for washing. We both have a real issue with nice clothes that come with cheap nasty zippers. No such problems here! It's all quality - the fabric, the fastenings, the trims. Fitted? Oh, but of course. Lovely fitting - it is abundantly clear that Nada is a lady who cares deeply about excellent fit. She is one of those wonderful people who believes that everybody deserves to look and feel wonderful, that clothing should fit bodies and not the other way around.

They are very wearable, really divine (we attract compliments like billy-o when we wear these garments), comfortable, sturdy ... have we raved enough yet? Probably not. Just to show how happy we are, we have promptly ordered more!

Now, the pricing. A custom-made garment of this quality is not going to cost what Target would charge. On the other hand Target won't make you clothes you will want to wear every day until they eventually fall off your body after years and years of faithful service (remember, these are classics that won't go out of fashion). If you go to a Big Name Designer you will pay much more, and once again you won't be getting the same quality or care in your garments. Something Else Clothing is somewhere in the middle range of pricing, and in terms of value for money it is really excellent - you get what you pay for plus a bit extra!

We all agree that it is important to build a capsule wardrobe of really, really good pieces that you adore and fit and you can always just fling on and know you are dressed right for the occasion. This is one place to go to get those crucial pieces. We are so lucky to have designers like Nada in Australia, and we need to support brave people like her who can turn the silly world of fashion on its head by providing what customers actually want, and need. Bravo Something Else Clothing!

Time Machine Vintage - exactly what you're after

Time Machine Vintage is our fab fab new Etsy discovery.

This is glorious vintage repro fashion, custom made for any body.

We both raced to make an order, and found Kim's service to be friendly, competent, prompt and so so professional! She consulted with us both in a cheery and friendly and wonderful way about exactly what we'd like and was super-accommodating.

She is one of those people who cares, first and foremost, that her customers will be thrilled with their perfectly tailored, custom-made outfit.

The finished product is EXCELLENT. This is seriously well-made stuff. It fits perfectly - not a single adjustment required. Kim found lots of gorgeous little custom extras (vintage-style Bakelite-y buckle! Matching buttons! Scalloped sleeves! Contrast stitching!) that really stand out. Everything is profesionally finished with a million little touches - such as contrast binding on the INSIDE skirt hem - little flashes of cute!

We are big fans of custom-made. None of this rubbish about standarised sizing, when it's abundantly clear that we are all unique. The fabrics look very good, the clothes are SO wearable. Why not give Time Machine Vintage a go - and say hi to the wonderful Kim. You will be very happy you did.

Arts

Both of the Darling Sisters work in the arts and culture fields, and we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to do so. Not only do we meet and work with many wonderful people, but we have the opportunity to observe first-hand how incredibly important the arts are as a part of everyday life. We love that there are so many people out there sharing their skills and talents with others. It is a shame that very few people in Australia or overseas can make a full-time living from their artistic talents. However we do believe that all of us who enjoy the arts should be willing to contribute part of our finances to keeping the arts alive. They say you never know what you had until it is gone. Let us appreciate artists now and enjoy what we have while it is ours to enjoy! Here are links to the pages of some wonderful, wonderful artists who the Darling Sisters are keen to appreciate.

Matt Huynh

Matt is the wonderful graphic artist who designed the Darling Sisters logo, which we adore. Matt is multi-talented, and his artistic talents are broad. Aside from the fact that Matt is a lovely person whose dealings with us have been ever so professional and friendly, we are in awe of his talent. If you ever find yourself wanting to commission some fabulous original art, we can't recommend Matt Huynh highly enough. Thank you Matt! You can enjoy some of Matt's artwork at his website:

Lady Luck Lampshades - gorgeous Australian design

Haven't you always wanted Victorian, vintage, burlesque, gothic and rockabilly lampshades, both freestanding and ceiling shades, to grace your home? Of course you have, even if you didn't know it.

We took one look at Lady Luck's collection and nearly fainted with the gorgeousness. The nicest thing is that these beauties are Australian made - and look how reasonable the prices are!

They even have the cutest kids' shades. What a lovely gift they would make. Do go to Lady Luck Lampshades and take a look!

Bloggy goodness

One of the reasons we adore the internet is because it gives articulate, smart, funny, original, witty people even more opportunities to share their talents with us. Of course there is plenty of the other - but the fact is that our lives have been enriched by certain people via the medium of the bloggy goodness, and we're mad-keen to share the fun.

We doubt there is enough room on the whole internet for us to share all of the stuff we love, but we can at least make a start here!

The Darling Sisters have a special affection for the sort of people who are open-minded, tolerant and charming. That doesn't mean that every word is positive, or even happy, because people have good days and bad days and the really cool bloggers like to share their experiences with us. Here you will find some good reading that inspires us - and please let us know those people who inspire you too!

The Canberra Cook

We confess this blog is by a lovely friend of ours, so we may be biased a bit: but let's face it, who doesn't love food? If you live in Canberra and enjoy eating out, this is a lovely blog. Cath, the Canberra Cook, is a keen gourmand who does Canberra restaurant reviews, and this is her personal blog. It does indeed include food and restaurant reviews, and it also has from time to time other tidbits that can be very intelligent and funny - not unlike our good Cath.

Gothic Charm School

If you are darkly-inclined, you may already know about and adore the Lady of the Manners. If you do not, for heavens sake go and take a look. If you are not a goth but know and love gothy types, or if you simply appreciate those who walk a path of their own choosing (and do so as decently and intelligently as they are able), go and take a look. If you simply appreciate nice manners and highly enjoyable writing, go and take a look. You will like.

The Rotund

Intelligent, funny, compassionate, positive and uninclined to put up with rubbish: the Rotund is a lovely site if you are so over the diet talk and so ready to be yourself. The Rotund is explicitly about fat acceptance and also touches on other areas of tolerance and anti-prejudice. We are firm believers in body acceptance, and no matter what shape or size you are, we encourage all Charming Friends to enjoy this site, since prejudice is everybody's problem, and tolerance is within everybody's power. Besides The Rotund is gorgeously written and frequently makes us glow with happy.

Boutiques

Online shopping is tremendous fun, but really nothing beats the great pleasure of walking into a shop, meeting the staff, browsing the shelves and experiencing the goods first-hand. The Darlings are uber-ninja-shoppers-from-hell. We love nothing more than frocking up for a day of shopping, browsing our favourite boutiques, stopping for a cup of tea or a glass of champers, and returning laden with lovely bags and comparing purchases.

Here are some of our favourite boutiques to visit.

You will notice that some places appear both on this page and on the Online Shopping page. It is becoming more common for boutique shop owners to maintain an online presence as well as a shopfront. However we do love to visit people in person wherever possible. It is such a pleasure to walk into these places and say hello to the lovely staff!

Retrospec'd Clothing

If you find yourself in Sydney it is always worth dropping in to Retrospec'd Clothing, to check out their reproduction vintage fashion for ladies and for gentlemen.

The Darling Sisters have been known to pop in 'for a moment' and then walk out with half the shop! They have a very classic range of pieces to make up a top-notch vintage-inspired wardrobe, in the most delicious fabrics and colours.

Retrospec'd also supplies a range of shoes and accessories, including hard-to-get Remix shoes, which last forever and are really comfortable.

We love our high-waisted Retrospec'd jeans, which are well-made of very good quality denim, and they wash to perfection.

You can always find a small selection of quality true vintage in the shop, which makes a personal visit worthwhile.

Certainly one of the nicest things about Retrospec'd is the staff, who are all fantastic, friendly and super-professional!

You can find Retrospec'd at 486 King Street Newtown, Sydney.

Entertainment

Everybody needs to be entertained, Charming Friends, and even during these times of economic oopsies, our need to smile is not diminished at all.

The Darlings have been known to grace the stage themselves from time to time. Consequently we have had our experiences, both fabulous and less than satisfactory, in the Wide World of entertainment ... or, at least those parts within reach of our little boudoirs.

You will find here links to our favourite entertainers. These are good people who put passion and energy into their art, make it accessible to the people who will appreciate it, and who act with professionalism, decency and charm at all times.

The fascinating Koop Kooper owns the velvety voice that makes our knees tremble whenever we listen to our favourite lounge music podcast, Cocktail Nation. Koop gives us the most wonderful lounge music of the 50s and 60s mixed in with some of the best modern lounge we have heard, along with news and interviews from the wide 'world of swank'.

Tony Haley

Tony Haley is one of our favourite Canberra resident crooners. His voice makes us swoon and he is always an absolute pleasure to listen to and watch on stage. Audiences all over Canberra and Sydney agree! This man has all the swinging style of Sinatra with the added attraction that he is right here and we can hear him live. We have both been fortunate enough to perform along with Tony and each time we have received the best audience feedback saying that he gives every stage that extra something that makes people tap their feet and click their fingers.

Online shopping

Darla and Blossom do confess to enjoying a certain amount of online shopping. After all, Canberra's shops are lovely but there are so many other lovely places around, and in this day and age it is tremendously easy to pop online and order from the comfort of the boudoir. (So easy, in fact, that the Darling credit cards occasionally need to spend a chilly little holiday in the freezer.)

Here you will find some of our favourite online shops. Please be assured that every shop you read about below has been personally tried and tested by the Darlings, and given the Darling Stamp of Approval.

Enjoy!

Bone Orchard at Kryptoph's

Oh, look at this gothy gorgeousness!

The Darlings love to attend Sydney's yearly festival of all things darkly romantic, Under the Blue Moon. This year we were browsing the gorgeous market stalls and came across Bone Orchard. One glance later and we were in love!

Not only are the products so delicious we could almost eat them, but the people who make and sell them are complete darlings. We don't know about you, but that always makes the product seem even better.

Lampshades, parasols and light shades that are utter confections of Victorianesque spooky loveliness. You do not need to be a goth to love these products. All Australian ladies should own at least one lovely parasol, and the lampshades would delight anybody who is tickled by a bit of dark romance. They are lovingly handmade and look at the very reasonable prices!

Find Bone Orchard at kryptoph.etsy.com.

Also available at Uncle Fester's and Le Cabinet des Curiosities, 97 Enmore Rd, NSW.

Purpur design and custom dressmaking

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooowwwwwwwwl! Divinely wicked fashion made especially for you!

Sometimes you see something so unbearably beautiful you just want to devour it.

At Under the Blue Moon in Sydney, the Darlings were browsing in Le Cabinet des Curiosities in Enmore when Darla grabbed Blossom's arm (ouch) and started desperately fanning herself in a fit of ecstasy. Upon investigating further, Blossom discovered that she had spotted the cutest little military-style hat in the world. Darla popped it on and naturally, it looked perfect. One purchase later, we went off on our way, with Darla looking as happy as a happy happy thing and various people complimenting her good taste in hats.

Shortly after that, a familiar hat caught our eye ... imagine our delight when we found the market stall belonging to Purpur Fashion! Purpur is run by the beautiful (no, really beautiful) Kate, who is Russian and has an accent we want to listen to all day long, and is very sweet and creates fantastic, wicked, divine, lovely, dark fashion.

Not only is the fashion fantastic, but it is custom made - so that it fits and always looks just right! We adore that.

Please take a look at the website: this is seriously beautiful stuff and the prices are excellent in that they definitely reflect the high quality of the fashion. This is the sort of fashion that you will treasure and wear as often as you can. Highly suitable for clubbing, gothicwear, nights out, gigs and special occasions. But take a close look: some of the pieces could be worn a lot more often than you might expect. Look at the military jackets for example ...

(By the way, Darla wore her new hat with a forties military-inspired frock that evening and looked ravishing!)

Something Else Clothing

We are always excited to meet new Australian vintage-style fashion suppliers and we were completely thrilled to discover Something Else Clothing.

Look at this gorgeousness! These are handmade by the designer, using quality fabrics and finished the way we all want our clothing to be finished.

This is style that can be worn every day, to work, to play and to special events. We have spoken to Nada, the designer, who is a delightful person and seems to have a good understanding of fit and shape.

Now, you know we have a special love for designers who are willing to outfit a large range of sizes and shapes. In spite of a fairly small range of sizes on the website, Nada does make custom sizing. She tells us that all she needs are measurements and off she goes. The custom orders are not too much more expensive than the off-the-rack, and we are encouraged that the level of detail put into fit is an excellent sign.

If you want something pretty that can be worn everywhere for many many years, give this lovely Australian designer a go.

Tiger Rag

It seems that a whole lot of good stuff is coming out of gorgeous BrisVegas these days! We have discovered Tiger Rag, a vintage-styles clothing emporium that caters for the ladies and the gentlemen! We have found Tiger Rag's service and quality to be marvellous, their range is really good. You do need to consult their sizing chart, however, as size availability varies between garments. If they don't have your size listed, contact them. They might provide custom service on some garments. We adore their accessories, and invite gentlemen especially to check them out, as they are things you won't find easily elsewhere.

If you are in Sunny Brissie it would be worth it dropping into their shop, especially if you want to see if they will do custom sizing. But they do make it easy to purchase online, so take a look and you may find a treat. www.tigerrag.com.au

Partee!

Shopping Mall Happiness

You wouldn't expect this, perhaps, but every now and again it is possible to have a fabulous shopping experience in a shopping mall.

No, really!

The Darlings do occasionally let themselves go in the Big Places. They shop then stop for a cup of tea then shop some more, and when the noise and Bad Stuff gets too much they go home.

However, some of the shopping is awfully good. Our criteria for quality Shopping Mall Happiness?

Who'd have thought?

TS 14 +

Fashion for ladies who are SO over that rubbish.

Sometimes one does not wish to go into a shop where every garment is a scaled-up sample size. Sometimes one does not wish to go into a shop where there are only three sizes left on the rack (and statistically there is a good chance none of those sizes will be yours). And sometimes one simply does not fit into the sizing that some completely random people have decised, against all statistical evidence, is acceptable.

Sometimes you just want to go into a nice shop and buy some nice clothing that fits and looks good, and be treated as a human being by nice and professional people.

If you are one of the squillions of women who are NOT considered 'normal' sized (ack! As if there could ever be such a thing!!!), do consider popping into this shop some time to remind yourself that a diversity of sizes and shapes is, in fact, part of the human existence of ours that is so wonderful. Admittedly the sizing starts at 14, so if you are smaller you do miss out on these nice clothes, unless (and this isn't a bad concept) you get them resized. However, the 14 to 24 sizing offered by this shop is at least two sizes better than those offered by most other retailers, and unlike others, these folks make an effort to actually stock all sizes (unlike some we could think of, who claim to offer up to size 18 and never ever have anything larger than 12 in stock.)

Although these clothes do stop at size 24 (which really isn't big enough to encapsulate the whole of human sizing) the manufacturers do us the honour of acknowledging that we are not the same shape as fashion models, only scaled up. In fact, we have necks, shoulders, arms, backs, waists, hips, thighs and calves that differ. A size 14 in this line is designed for most woman of size 14, a size 24 is designed for most woman of size 24.

Consequently the clothing fits, and fits well. Furthermore, it comes in gorgeous styles, beautiful shapes (this is NOT Muu-muus Galore, most of the clothes fit nicely ... you know, fit), and they are pretty and come in a range of extremely classy and wearable colours, shapes and fabrics. None of this hiding away in tents, skulking in dark colours, or Extreme Modesty. No! These clothes are womens' clothes for women. You can fit, skim or drape. You can dress like the knockout you are. And then they will wrap your purchase in pretty tissue and you can walk away swinging that nice grey carrier bag with pride.

Special Charming Service Providers

Every now and again one needs to find a specialist to do something correctly and wonderfully.

Here are the people without whom we could not survive - providers of very special services, people with those professional skills that just can't be found easily, and people who can make our lives a bit more Darling ...

Angelina Broso - gorgeous, fabulous makeup

Every now and then a lady (or gent) needs something special in terms of maquillage (or slap, if you prefer) in order to look super-charming for a special event - and we know just the lady for the job.

Angelina Broso is a delightful lady who has been doing makeup for performers, dancers, brides and fantasticlaly stylish ladies for many years in Canberra. The Darlings trust her absolutely to create any look desired, and we can tell you that she will produce the perfect vintage look for any occasion.

Angelina can be found on Facebook, or via email at angmakeup@hotmail.com.

TT Fashion - superb tailoring and alterations for special garments

When the Darlings purchse something special - say, a magnificent vintage frock - and it just needs a bit of alteration, or when we have a dress we adore enough to want copied in a different size, we go directly to our favourite tailor in Canberra: TT Fashion. Upstairs in Baileys Arcade, Canberra City.

'Mr T' is an expert tailor who is capable of altering, recreating or making pretty much anything. He is the person we trust with key vintage, expensive garments or when we know we need something to fit and fit well. His finish is always magnificent, it is impossible to tell that the garment has even been altered. Best of all, if he genuinely thinks something is not going to work, he will always politely say so, and then suggest workable alternatives.

It is so often the case that people will sigh to us that they tried on this wonderful vintage garment but didn't purchase it because it 'didn't quite fit'. We say, go ahead and buy your dream garment. Give TT Fashion a call on02 6262 8988 or just bring it to Baileys Arcade during business hours and pop in. You will find the very reasonable cost very worthwhile to have a beautiful, unique garment that fits you perfectly.

The Lindy Charm School for Girls

Charming friends,

We can't resist having a separate category for our gorgeous friends the ladies of the Lindy Charm School for Girls.

Mistress Chrissy and her glamorous Charm School teachers are every kind of lovely and we adore their efforts to bring a little vintage glamour into every Australian lady's life. The Lindy Charm School is based in sunny Queensland, but thanks be to heaven, they are willing to travel around Australia. We hope very much to see them in Canberra again soon. We'd love to get together to play!

The Lindy Charm School for Girls teaches lucky ladies the arts of vintage-style glamour, including how to get those glorious hairstyles of the early 20th century just right.

We have both attended the Lindy Charm School and felt that we learned a great deal. It was fun, fun, fun. Full of laughs and life lessons, very cosy and very glam. We can't recommend them highly enough. We know that the Lindy Charm girls are very popular with swing dancers but you don't have to be a dancer to get a lot out of the experience.

Next time we hear about the Lindy Charm School for Girls coming to Canberra, we'll let you know (oooh, perhaps September 2009?) and do keep an eye out on Mistress Chrissy's MySpace page for more details: http://www.myspace.com/lindycharmschoolforgirls
